2011-2012 Ohio New Year
Novemeber 12
The Hmong Ohio Mutual Association, Inc (HOMAI) is hosting our 2011-2012 New Year festival November 12, 2011 from 10 AM to midnight at the Knights of Columbus (2055 Glenmount Avenue, Akron, Ohio). This is opened to the public. All are welcome to attend.
The Hmong New Year is traditionally held a month before the end of the year usually after the end of the harvest as a time of celebrating, feasting and joining -- more in tunes of a Thanksgiving than a New Year.
This year we will be hosting a Hmong Idol singing contest. All performances must be in or at least half in Hmong.
Come and enjoy a full day of traditions, songs, dance, food and fun.
Date: Saturday November 12, 2011
Time: 8AM to Midnight
Place: 2055 Glenmount Avenue, Akron, Ohio

Great Minds Educational Services
FREE TUTORING
Math or Reading
Great Minds Educational Services provides free tutoring by qualified tutors at your home or nearby.
Tutors are current or former teachers or substitute teachers, or have at least two years of college. All tutors pass a state /
federal police background check.
- We prepare learning plans to match each childŐs ability. We report progress regularly.
- We accommodate students with disabilities or special needs.
Eligibility: Students must receive free or reduced price lunch and attend one of these schools:
- Akron Opportunity Center
- Barrett Academy
- Bridges Learning Center
- East CLC (Grades 7-12)
- Findley CLC Hill CLC
- Hyre CLC
- Innes CLC
- Jennings CLC
- Kent Middle School
- Litchfield Middle School
- Perkins Middle School
- Rankin Elementary
- Schumacher Elementary
- Seiberling Elementary
When and where? Our tutoring is in the homes of the students, or a nearby location. The schedule is set by each parent: usually two
1-hour classes per week, after school or early evening.
Type of instruction: We use the Study Island on-line program, which is geared to each grade level in reading and math and Ohio's
academic content standards. We use Study Island pre and post tests as the basis for each studentŐs individual learning plan, which is
approved by parents and the district.
- Reading instruction focuses on the six reading dimensions of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension,
and motivation.
- Math instruction includes numbers, measurements, geometry & spatial sense, patterns, functions & algebra, and data analysis with
probability.
Bilingual tutors: We will tutor in English, but will try to hire bilingual tutors, which allows easier communication with parents who
may have limited English proficiency.
Measuring results: Student performance is measured often. When students do not advance as planned, more intense instruction and review
is provided. We report student progress to parents and the district weekly and monthly.
Student / Parent Responsibilities: Students are expected to attend and participate in all scheduled tutoring sessions. Parents /
guardians must be present during all in-home tutoring. Parents must review their childŐs progress with the tutor weekly, and sign all
attendance sheets.
